How to get ahead (a HEAD - geddit???)

This is what I am trying to finish by working all weekend - sometimes I look at it and think, "almost done..." and then I think I have another week left on it...

Either way, it is going up to the customer next week, without fail - even if I have to work on it up in the garden. The trouble is, it is BLOODY hard stone, and I need air-hammers to scratch it.

It also weighs almost three quarters of a ton...

  1. That's beautiful...you really are a clever old thing aren't you!

  2. I'm afraid so, Jacqueline. After 35 years, I ought to still have customers, and, thankfully, I do. I just wish that... oh, never mind.

  3. How long did it take you to knock that up? I think it looks quality skilled work. Customer should be highly delighted. I like all the attention to detail. Can't see that there's much if anything to improve on. He'd frighten the hell out of me if he was in our garden.

  5. That's amazing! What/who is it based on?

  6. Thanks all for the above. It is loosely based on an antique or 18th century tradition of 'River Gods', which were probably related to Neptune.

He has to look intelligent, but not wise. He has to look old, but powerful. He has to look knowing, but careless. He has to look dangerous, but safe. He has to look like he is the source to every river that you are ever likely to see in England. He is the fresh-water version of Bill Nighy in 'Pirates of the Caribean'. (or however you spell it)

  7. I was so sure it was Socrates on a rainy Monday. Silly me.

  8. Good idea, but Socrates had a much blobbier nose and an altogether more humorous disposition, I think. I'll post up a picture of Soc, just for you, Mise.

  9. Didn't Socrates suffer from some form of dwarfism?

Love your head Tom. I've got just the place for it!!!!!

  10. I've never heard of Soccy being a dwarf. The place I've got for the head is so far away from the house that it's going to look like a pin-head. There is about 3 miles between the front entrance and the one I am obliged to use as a tradesman.

  11. The head is now in place at the garden. I'll post pictures of it in situ, then pray that I get paid, otherwise I will be asking you all for food donations (which I will give to my credit card company).
