More marine life, immortalised in stone - I don't know why it is so easy to pull something out of the sea, and get good results simply by copying it.This was a sample carving for a customer (about 20 years ago) who wanted a Bath stone fire-surround with decoration in the spandrils (corners to you). He lived in Poole, Dorset, so I suggested a pattern of star fish which I thought would go well, in a themed sort of way. He took this one home to his wife, who told him that she didn't like star fish. This - after about 40 years of married life - was probably the first time she had shared her phobia with him, having gone down to the sea to retire. They eventually settled on ivy leaves.
Oh well, win some, lose some.
I don't like starfish either and I doubt if my husband knows that about me. I find they always stink. Even the store bought ones from Walmart have a pong.

ReplyDeleteI love starfish, and I think it would look awesome decorating a fireplace. Maybe a starfish on one corner and an sand dollar on the other. :-)
