Bending the Rules

I hear that in the run-up to the general election, a leading Conservative spokesman has been heard saying that he thinks that Bed and Breakfast establishments here in the UK should be allowed to turn away Gay couples if they so wished.

This has produced (predictably) an indignant reaction from 'Lord' Peter Mandelson, but it is all very well for him to say what he did, as I cannot imagine that his Lordship would be seen dead in a B & B.

Actually, I can envisage a situation whereby his Lordship could be found dead in a Bed and Breakfast hostelry, but I think it would be putting an undue strain on the codes of decency to describe it, so I'll just leave it up to your imagination.

The unofficial reason given for the Conservative's suggestion for the 'freedom of choice' option for B & B owners, was that the presence of a brace of Dorothy's friends under one's roof may offend religious sensibilities, but I think the real reason may be much more prosaic than that. Something to do with thin walls and being forced to have breakfast with your guests in the tiny kitchen at around 7.00 am in the morning I dare say. And that's all I dare say.
