Very important - to ordinary people

You know when you ask for the bill in a restaurant and they put an optional 10% on the print-out for 'service'? Don't pay it.

Pay the basic amount for the dinner, then leave a cash tip for the waiters, otherwise they will not see a penny over their minimal wage from the restaurant.

Be nice. Be generous.

    1. Peter gets hold of the server, hugs him and stuffs money in his hand. He has very strong views on this subject. He is a generous tipper too.

    2. I do that with the female waiters, and it doesn't go down well.

  2. I try to leave cash, too. I always worry about adding a tip onto a credit card receipt...I want to be sure the server gets their money! And I'm a very generous tipper. Servers work really hard and their base pay is shamefully low.

    1. Exactly. The wages system in restaurants is meant to be brought up to an acceptable level with tips, and now most chain restaurants want to take the tips but leave the wages as they are.

  3. Luckily 'tipping' is not really done here.... other than in very fancy restaurants (which we don't frequent). Otherwise, I agree totally.

    1. Yes, tipping is considered demeaning by revolutionary society. Luckily, restaurant work is seen as a job for life in good French restaurants. Unluckily, good French restaurants are getting hard to find.

  4. Tom. Actually, if a waiter has been particularly nice I sometimes give him the tip as he calls for the last time at the table. Otherwise I am not convinced that he actually gets it.

  5. I've waited tables and worked the front desk of a restaurant. We paid the staff the tips right away. When the server returned the credit card slip to the front desk we paid out the tip in cash from the till. I know many servers who always get their tips from credit cards.

  6. Minimum tips in US are 15%-20%. It is getting rather expensive to eat out especially when you have to pay for the kids and grand kids. I'm still waiting for the time they pay for our dinner.
