The average shoot costs about £500 per gun, and the 'gun' is permitted to take home a brace at no extra. They hate bad shots, because the beaters are usually paid according to the day's kill, so if you have a load of corporate idiots banging away uselessly, then the take home pay goes right down.Tom Stephensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05979590950587415840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505385214324438018.post-76176979670789735562012-04-21T20:07:52.596-07:002012-04-21T20:07:52.596-07:00You astonish me how you have worked this all out. ...You astonish me how you have worked this all out. When my husband, now 70, was a boy, the local Lord used to hire him as a 'beater' for the weekend shoots. The Lord also deigned, from time to time, to bestow the occasional brace of pheasant to my mother-in-law. Ahhh! If you actually do believe it, then can you explain why they choose to walk under the wheels of cars, or try to outrun foxes after all these years of being shot at?

Do you think that the pheasants are so bright that they have learnt the unwritten laws regarding shooting protocol, in the short time that shooting them (about 200 years in this country) has allowed them to pass on this information to their young via a process of evolution? Have they worked out that a carcass full of shot is not to our taste, so try to keep as close to the guns as possible?

Tell me you jest... please!Tom Stephensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05979590950587415840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505385214324438018.post-2435340905060765922012-04-21T06:41:38.509-07:002012-04-21T06:41:38.509-07:00The reason why pheasants tend to walk rather than ...The reason why pheasants tend to walk rather than fly is not daft at all Tom - on the contrary. They have learned that they will not get shot if they walk as shooters are not allowed to shoot down at the ground - they must raise their guns.
I don't particularly like meat but can't be bothered to stop eating it.
