Sitting on a goldmine

I was watching the funny series, 'Detectorists' last night, and thought I recognised an elderly woman actor playing one character's mother. When the credits came up I read that the woman was Diana Rigg.

Later on the radio, a woman was talking about how - historically - women in thrillers and action movies were always portrayed as the love-interest or object of sexual diversion to the leading man, which is how (she said) the Hollywood culture of abuse against women has been allowed to become as ingrained as it obviously is.

Then I thought, 'Emma Peel' (played by Diana Rigg) in 'The Avengers' never fell into that category. True, there was always an unfulfilled hint of erotic flirtation between Steed and Peel, but she was not averse to kicking men in the testicles very hard when it was called for. Indeed, she seemed to do it in every episode. She specialised in kicking men in the nuts.

Then I looked up Diana Rigg in the archives and came across this photo above.

If she was not so busy in film and TV and was a bit strapped for cash, then the case against him for historical sexual abuse would fly through the courts with irrefutable photographic evidence of this  quality. There is a mitigating smile, but nothing a good barrister could not handle.

  1. The things going on in the entertainment industry reflect what women have had to put up with everywhere else. I doubt you would find many women born before say 1990 who hadn't been on the receiving end of some kind of unpleasantness from uncles, bosses or colleagues. Those who didn't comply were labelled as frigid or feminists.

    1. Not from this uncle they didn't. Maybe this colleague though, but I have never been in in a great enough position of power to abuse it.

    2. Any refusals I have had over the years have not been blamed on frigidity and I only ever called someone a feminist if they were one. I used to go to the feminist group meetings here as a special guest. They fancied me.

    1. I don't know what you are talking about. The mis-placed apostrophe isn't helping.

    2. Ah there is a suggestion that persons of low morals with pleasurable masochistic tendencies also have short memories ?

    1. Now I am wondering if the question mark means that this isn't a statement. Do you have 'there is' round the right way?

    1. Yes, I see that, but she was great in the role and she really could do judo.

    2. And she looked good in black leather when not many do.

  5. I suppose there is a back room at the BBC (or ITV) where there are reels upon reels of old Avengers programmes. Possibly time they were given another airing.

  6. I liked Joanna Lumley best but that was The New Avengers so maybe it doesn't count.

  7. I think they were sex symbols with balls so to speak...having said that wasn't Emma Peel always filmed in a pointy breasted cat suit?
At least they always referred to her as Mrs Peel which was a nice nod to the " older" lady

  8. I just loved The Avengers Tom - we didn't know about sexual harrassment in those days!

    1. Me too. We knew about it but didn't know what it was called. I longed for it, but usually only got it from drunken Glaswegian men at Waterloo station.

  9. Luckily, I have made it so far in life without ever having been at the receiving end of any kind of unpleasantness from relatives, bosses or colleagues. Not even once. Not ever. I adore the show 'The Detectorists'! The characters are all so very quirky. I just want them all to be my friends. And then I want to buy a metal detector. And then I want to sit in a pub together with them and bask in the glory of our dorkiness. And as far as Emma Peel goes - she kicked some butt!

    1. I have always wanted to go out with a metal detector (the machine, not the person), but I would be a bit too embarrassed.

    2. Embarrassed? Nooooooooooo! I would be up for it in a heartbeat. And if anybody gives you a funny look, just give them a chin-up nod while saying in heavy American slang: 's up?

    1. It sets the scene very well. Folky and a bit nerdish.

  11. Emma Peel is a fine, tough woman who would never have thought it necessary to sue a man.
The discussions today baffles me when some then grown-up women needed 10 years or more to feel insulted.
Especially as we all know that some very rich men are only married for their beautiful souls.

    1. I find the retrospective judgements made 10, 20 or 30 years after social mores or even the laws have changed, a bit dubious.
