NYA, NYA NYA NYA NYA, CRO!

I was walking toward Waitrose when I heard some tourists say, "Look at the size of them!" I looked over a fence and saw these Horse Mushrooms on some rough ground twenty feet away from the entrance. I jumped the fence and picked them before any Poles spotted them. They were right in the middle of town.

The biggest is 8 inches across. Tomorrow they will be in a risotto or similar, or we might have the biggest fry-up for years.

Hey, Cro, WHADAYA THINK NOW, EH?

    1. 2 out of 3 tests positive. No yellow stain on cutting. Smell of aniseed on cutting. Spore print will be examined tomorrow.

  4. Tom, I just knew this was a good day to catch up on what's happened/happening in blogland.

May I tell you that your posts continue to cover a very wide span of topics and do it very well. What you wrote about the tower fire contains some of the feeling I currently have about the so-called health care legislation that's just been revealed by the Senate boss.

Continued best wishes to you and yours.

  6. I have small field mushrooms growing in my paddock (in autumn) which I might eat if there's nothing better around, otherwise no white mushroom enters my kitchen.

  7. I found a couple in our paddock yesterday Tom - very early I would say but risotto sounds nice next time I find some. No taste like it.

    1. Someone said that they run from June to December. That sounds late as well as early!

    1. Waste ground is not the right word for it. There is a patch of ground surrounding an air extractor to an underground car park which is planted up with shrubbery and a couple of little trees. They recently tarted it up and spread some wood-chippings over the ground. I guess they imported the mushrooms with the wood chip.

I think I have just put myself off cooking them, because I have spent a long time making sure they are not the poisonous Yellow-Stainers, I have just remembered that the area is infested with rats.

    2. I was puzzled. Now I see.

I cut through Morrisons car park the other morning and a rat ran in front of me and into a neat border of shrubs placed to make the rear of the shop look nice. People just don't realise these super shiny supermarkets harbour such filthy creatures.

  10. They look nice Tom but I have a little suspicious mind about mushrooms. However, we have some mushrooms growing outside the parish home and since I am the mad hatter I pick and eat them. So far I have survived. A friend of mine says: Oh, all mushrooms are eatable but some only once!! Good luck with the hunting, only go easy on the fence jumping !!!
