'king Bluetooth

A quick word before I go mad trying to get my iMac to talk to my iPhone and Bluetooth 250 phone numbers over. I may go mad quickly, but it could take all weekend before I admit defeat and take the phones to an Asian gentleman who will do it in a few seconds. ( 'Good luck with your contacts; my Samsung did it in two seconds without me touching anything'. Rachel, today.)

Ever wondered how 'Bluetooth' became called that? So have I - until a couple of days ago.

Unless my informant was having a laugh at my expense, in Finland - the ancestral and spiritual home of Nokia (sadly now deceased) - there lived a monarch called King (Harald) Bluetooth. ('Nokia had nothing to do with Bluetooth technology'. Rachel, today).

He was called 'Bluetooth' because (yes, you guessed it) he had blue teeth. How, I hear you ask, did he get blue teeth?

Well, he and his subjects lived in an area renowned for its abundance of Galena, the ore from which you smelt lead. I think that they made their fortune by selling lead to others who did not have the commodity to hand.

The first signs of lead poisoning are that your teeth turn blue. The next thing to happen is you go mad. So now you know if you didn't already.

The doorbell has just gone off, and the iPhone sent by Jack@ as a present for H.I. has just arrived! It's better than mine - I'm jealous! Thank you Jack@.

  1. Have you downloaded Sierra as I understand that it connects all of your Apple devices with ease ?

    1. No, because I have only just turned the machine over to el Capitan, and I am still sorting that out.

  2. Nokia is still going albeit a shadow of its former self. Bluetooth technology was a boom way to make money in 1999/2000 on the stockmarket. Good luck with your contacts; my Samsung did it in two seconds without me touching anything.

    2. I am trying not to interpret your ease of transferal to Samsung as more smugness. I have just taken both of mine to a shop expert, who told me I stood no chance as the two - no three - machines use different types of Bluetooth. It took me about 4 hours to find that out. £30 to get him to do it.

  3. Our local Cahors wine (sometimes known as Black Wine) has a lot on tannin, and stains teeth a dirty blue.

    1. I remember you preoudly saying that you had a rare set of extremely hardy 'blue' teeth in around 1969. Was I imagining it, or were you?

    1. I didn't see it either, but I may have gone blind through staring at screens all morning.

  8. Well I got fed up with screaming and swearing, so I am going to pick up my loaded phone from the shop in half an hour. I told the man what I had tried to do, and he said that the Bluetooth systems on Nokia are not compatible with the ones on the iPhone, or - for that matter - the one on the iMac. When I said I had tried to iCloud it all (against my better judgement), he laughed and said, 'That never works." Still, my cup is half full. Jack@'s free phone to H.I. means that I have only spent about £110 on two. That's what I would call a bargain, discounting the 8 hours of extreme stress trying to get mine loaded.

  10. I have seen blue people that ingest silver, but not teeth. Sorry about the tech stuff. I have the Icloud and whatever else I know nothing about. Only need my songs to play over bluetooth in my car and I'm good to go.
