Careful what you wish for

Last year I casually mentioned that my trainee sculptural assistant needed a larger workshop than the converted container he was then using, and they said they would rustle one up.

I went to see it yesterday, and I am really not exaggerating when I say that you could kit it out as an operating theatre right now, and it would pass all the tests to qualify as one. It will be finished today, and we can properly move in and start using it. I really needs to be contaminated, or 'lived in', as the expression goes.

I knew that my suggestions are usually taken seriously enough to be carefully considered, but I am amazed at how seriously they have been considered in this instance. I mustn't let it go to my head.

A manager pulled up alongside us in a large 4x4 and wound down the window for a brief chat.

"I would be careful driving that thing around if I were you," said my glamorous assistant. I asked the driver why he should be careful.

"Because everyone else who has driven this has been sacked."

As Joanne says, nobody is indispensable.

  1. I am not sure that I understand this post. I am failing to see the connection between your excellent advice about the clinical sculpture studio (and imagining a stainless steel work surface and neat chisels instead of a large, empty concrete floor, angle grinder and dust) and the man in the 4x4.

    1. Well what is the bloody connection?

    2. Do you ever listen to anything I say? Obviously not. I have said so many times that if I have to explain something then I won't. That goes for jokes as well as references to other shit which you have not been bothered to read properly.

I don't blame you though - I hardly ever read anything you say right through either.

    3. I read one paragraph and scan the rest but I don't always read anymore after the first paragraph I form a comment with whatever immediately comes into my head.

    4. That's the way you write as well I expect.

  2. It will be such a relief when the first cup of coffee is spilled. Enjoy, and let someone else drive the 4x4.

  3. Agree with Rachel Tom but somehow can't see you working in any sort of clinically clean workshop. Scatter a bit of stone dust or whatever about to make it look a bit lived in.

    1. You two need to see more of each other maybe?

    2. My next post is going to be imagined conversations between bloggers meeting each other for the first time.
