Ticking boxes
This pathetic picture is the best I could snatch off eBay. It is a double shot of a Georgian, glass candlestick dating from the first half of the 18th century. It came up on eBay a week ago and I have been watching it slip out of my grasp.
I thought, 'no point in bidding on that, it will go for between £400 and £500'. It sold for £410 last night.
Oh well. What amazes me is that it has survived, even with people putting burning candles in it - there again, maybe they didn't, which is how it survived.
Same with the drinking glasses - safe in the hands of drunkards.

Can't really see it, but the base looks nice. Roman archaeological sites are full of broken glass, as I imagine are Georgian sites. As you say...a miracle.
ReplyDeleteRoman yes, Georgian no.
DeleteMiracle indeed that it survived. I am rather hamfisted so would never risk that much of anything made of glass - I like my expensive things to be bounceable.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to imagine expensive, bounceable things now.
DeleteI hope that you are all safely home over there in Bath
ReplyDeleteYes thanks. I did drive past the very same turn-off at just the time it happened, but I took an even steeper route back into town.
DeleteI think I actually overtook the same tipper at junction 18. Horrible, poor sods.
DeleteIf I had a lot of money, glass would be the collection of choice I think. They look gorgeous; well, actually, they look like clear plastic drawing pins, but you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteYes. I am still not too clear as to why I find them so alluring, but I think you understand.
